Experience
Scott is the Director of the James law Group's Litigation Practice Group.
Scott has over 25 years experience as a litigator. He has successfully conducted over 70 jury trials, arbitrrations, and bench trials. He has defended and taken over 2,500 fact and expert depositions. His trial experience includes complex commercial and civil litigation, employment disputes, class action litigation and construction defect cases.
Scott was lead trial co-counsel in a plaintiff double class action pension benefit lawsuit. He represented more than 50,000 members whose retirement benefits had been reduced. He prevailed at trial and on appeal and recovered what experts calculated to be $1.0+ billion in restored retirement benefits payable to each class member in increased monthly benefits for the life of all members of the class.
Scott was also lead defense counsel in an environmental pollution case where multiple defendants were sued for millions of dollars to clean up a polluted site in the Portland harbor. The defendants were adverse to each other. He tried the entire case when another lawyer became seriously ill about two months before trial. He ultimately settled the case several weeks into trial on terms viewed as very favorable by the client.
He was also lead trial counsel defending two companion class action lawsuits in Washington and Oregon state courts. Scott managed and supervised several lawyers and staff in other law firms. The plaintiff classes claimed a cumulative $30 million in damages. The case was dismissed following insurance coverage related motion practice.
